London Stansted Airport has this week called for significant improvements to rail links to help create jobs and growth, improve local commuter access and allow Stansted to win new passengers and airlines. SACC backs the campagin

The airport has launched its ‘Stansted in 30’ campaign to urge the rail industry and Government to act now by investing to cut journey times on Stansted Express trains to and from the capital to 30 minutes.

It currently takes 45 minutes to cover the 35 miles between the airport and London Liverpool Street. Slashing journey times between the airport and London will boost Stansted’s ability to compete, win new business and bring significant benefits to communities up and down the line.

  • Target journey time of 30 minutes to London Liverpool Street
  • Local commuters to also benefit from more frequent and reliable trains
  • Faster rail links will help attract more airlines and passengers

London Stansted Airport is today calling for significant improvements to the rail links at the UK’s fourth busiest airport to help create jobs and growth, improve local commuter access and allow Stansted to win new passengers and airlines.

The Airport is launching its ‘Stansted in 30’ campaign to urge the rail industry and Government to act now by investing to cut journey times on Stansted Express trains to and from the capital to 30 minutes.

It currently takes 45 minutes to cover the 35 miles between the airport and London Liverpool Street. Slashing journey times between the airport and London will boost Stansted’s ability to compete and bring significant benefits to communities up and down the line.

Launching the ‘Stansted in 30’ campaign, Stansted’s Managing Director, Nick Barton, said:

“We want the rail industry and Government to act now to slash the Stansted to Liverpool Street journey to 30 minutes. Businesses, passengers and airlines tell us how important fast, reliable and quality rail services are. Whilst we have the newest trains serving any UK airport, we know there is still plenty more to do when it comes to improving speed and reliability.

“I’m very proud that nearly 49% of our passengers already use public transport to get to and from the airport – the highest of any major UK airport.  But we can’t maintain or build on this success without major rail investment, which has to be included in the Government’s policy announcement this summer.”

Local MP, Sir Alan Haselhurst is supporting the campaign and said:

“I am very pleased that the Airport has signalled its determination to campaign for a better deal for users of the West Anglia mainline.  I have been lobbying the Government and Network Rail for years to get their act together and do something about the speed, frequency and reliability of our rail services.

“I understand the importance to an airport on the threshold of Cambridge and surrounded by many small and medium-sized businesses of having a fast connection to the capital.  Regular commuters equally deserve the improved standard of service to which extra track capacity is the essential key.

“The Government will publish its plans for rail investment up to the 2020s this summer.  The time is right for ministers to recognise the needs of commuters, business and air passengers alike.  It is an alliance which should be heeded without further delay”.

Business groups along the line have also got behind the campaign with Colin Stanbridge, Chief Executive at London Chamber of Commerce and Industry noting:

“Better and faster rail access to London’s airports such as Stansted creates the connectivity our international trading partners in European and emerging markets require to do business in London.  With the Government keen to see more inward investment and increased exports, slashing journey times to London’s airports is vital to boosting growth and productivity in London and the UK as a whole”.

Over 300 job seekers from across the region flocked to a job fair at London Stansted this week to see the array of employment opportunities on offer at the airport.

Organised by the Stansted Employment and Skills Academy, potential workers of the future packed Stansted’s Enterprise House on Thursday, April 12, keen to meet and speak to a wide range of airport companies. Firms attending included the Radisson Blu Hotel, Harrods Aviation, Starbucks, Wetherspoons, Monsoon, bus and coach operator - TGM, Aero Associates, Premier Inn, Dixons and JD Sports.

Anita Garrard, manager of the Stansted Employment and Skills Academy, said:

“It was an extremely busy day with a tremendous amount of people coming from all parts of the region and London to see what opportunities there are at Stansted. Job seekers were able to meet potential employers face to face, obtain careers advice and receive guidance about the application process for jobs at the airport.“

Chris Wiggan, Stansted Airport’s Head of Public Affairs, said:

“Stansted Airport is the biggest single site employer in the East of England, employing over 10,000 people. The high turnout clearly demonstrates that the airport is an attractive and desirable location for people to work, either taking the first steps on the work ladder or looking for a new career direction.”

London Stansted Airport today unveiled a major new advertising campaign in its iconic terminal to support the Government’s ‘GREAT Britain – You’re Invited’ initiative. The campaign is part of the UK’s drive to promote inbound tourism, attract new business and deliver long-term economic benefits in 2012 and beyond.

Stansted Airport's Great CampaignAs the busiest single terminal for overseas visitors arriving in the UK by air, and with more scheduled connections across Europe than any other airport in the world, Stansted is an ideal platform to showcase the best of British to overseas visitors

Speaking at the launch of the ‘GREAT’ campaign at Stansted, Head of Public Affairs, Chris Wiggan, commented:

“Millions of foreign visitors already pass through our doors each year to take advantage of our direct and easy links to London and our excellent location in the eastern region, on the doorstep of the globally renowned University City of Cambridge, the world-famous Newmarket racecourse and idyllic Constable Country.

“As the eyes of the world prepare to focus on London later this year, and with our expansive route network of over 150 direct connections across Europe, we’re delighted to lend our support to this important Government-lead initiative to raise international awareness and boost inbound tourism to the UK.”

Patricia Yates, Director of Strategy & Communications at VisitBritain said:

“As one of the first experiences that a visitor has when arriving from overseas, it is vital that our airports are able to provide a warm welcome and show our new guests what it is that makes a trip to the UK so special. Having images throughout Stansted that shows what can be found across Britain helps us to highlight all that is GREAT about the country as we look to significantly increase the number of people coming here each year.”

Posters included in the campaign launched at Stansted today carry messages that include:

  • Heritage is Great Britain – Discover beautiful architecture of Cambridge, the number one university in the world;
  • Shopping is Great Britain – London is the shopping capital of the world;
  • Technology is Great Britain – London’s Tech City is the largest and fastest-growing tech cluster in Europe…and only 45 minutes from Stansted.
