Air MoldovaAir Moldova touched down at Stansted (yesterday) in spectacular fashion with Chief Executive Officer and qualified captain, Iulian Scorpan, at the controls of the inaugural flight from Chisinau International Airport to mark the start of a new twice weekly service that doubles the airline’s capacity to London.

Air MoldovaStansted Airport’s fire service provided a traditional water arch salute to welcome arriving passengers, who were also handed complimentary first class Stansted Express tickets as they disembarked; and  passengers waiting to board the flight to Moldova were treated to celebratory cake at the gate.

Speaking about the airline’s move back to Stansted, Iulian Scorpan CEO of Air Moldova said:

“This move to Stansted has given us the opportunity to double the frequency of flights we operate to London and I was so excited to be moving our UK flight operations from Gatwick that I decided to captain the inaugural flight myself.  Direct connections to London are an important part of our business and this new twice weekly service to Stansted is already proving popular.

“Air Moldova’s business class passengers will also benefit from fast track at security and complimentary access to the No1 Traveller lounge at Stansted so I’m thrilled to finally touchdown and launch this new connection.”

Air Moldova is the first new airline to join Stansted’s network since M.A.G toAir Moldovaok ownership in February and welcoming the airline’s inaugural arrival was Operations Director, Martin Lyall, who said:

“We have ambitious plans under M.A.G ownership to attract new airlines and expand the scope of destinations on our network so I’m delighted to welcome Captain Scorpan and Air Moldova to Stansted and mark the arrival of the first new airline to join us in this exciting new era.”

Fares from Stansted to Chisinau start at just £105 economy and £356 in business class.  For further information and flight reservations visit www.airmoldova.md

London Stansted says reductions in night flight limits would have a damaging effect on the economy and lead to flights moving to airports with greater environmental impacts.

BA 747-8This is the key message from London Stansted’s response to the Department for Transport’s consultation on the Night Flying Restrictions at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted which closes this week.

Chris Wiggan, Stansted Airport’s Head of Public Affairs and Sustainable Development, said:

“As the UK economy improves and passenger and freight movements continue to grow at Stansted, it is vital that Government recognises this potential and retains our full night flight quota limit. Whilst we understand that night noise is an important issue for airport communities, a reduction in the limit would have a damaging effect on the UK economy and only serve to transfer movements to airports with greater environmental impacts.

“Since the current night regime began in 2007, Stansted has made significant strides to reduce its noise footprint with the introduction of the latest generation of quieter and more efficient aircraft and now serves one of the youngest fleets in operation in the UK. In partnership with our Noise and Track Keeping Working Group, we continue to explore and trial operational procedures that help to reduce noise impacts for our local communities, including slightly steeper angles of approach for some arriving aircraft to reduce the noise contour associated with all operations, especially night time arrivals.

“Stansted is unique in the South East as the only airport with a dedicated freight as well as a passenger operation. Over 1,000 people are employed in the freight operation, 500 alone at FedEx’s UK base at Stansted. The speed of delivery that air freight can offer is an increasingly important factor for many modern businesses, especially where just-in-time practices and high value commodities are concerned. For example, Royal Mail’s London Gateway at Stansted processes 5 million items per night that allows the latest possible collection time from customers whilst guaranteeing next day delivery.

“Night flights are not only critical to the express freight industry, they are important for passenger services and support the operations of affordable leisure and long haul travel. Airlines like Ryanair and easyJet rely on flying in the early and late hours to maximise efficiency of their aircraft to help keep ticket prices down for passengers. It is also vital that any future night flights regime takes into consideration the Airports Commission process and supports airports in making the best use of available runway capacity in the UK over the short and medium term.

“It’s essential that Government policy strikes the right balance between the economic, environmental and social impacts of aviation. In striking this balance Government should take full account of the critical role Stansted Airport and night flights play in supporting the growth of the economy, both in our region and the UK as a whole,” concluded Mr Wiggan.

London Stansted Airport has added another honour to its trophy cabinet after picking up an ‘Air Cargo Award of Excellence’.

The Air Cargo World Excellence Awards acknowledge achievements in air cargo and is based on a survey of airline and industry professionals.  Stansted received top marks for performance, value and facilities in the Europe category of airports handling up to 399,999 tonnes of freight a year.Stansted Airport Cargo Centre

Mark Souter, Stansted Airport’s Head of Airline Relations, said:

“We’re extremely proud to receive the ‘Air Cargo Award of Excellence’, especially as it’s voted for by our airlines and industry partners. Stansted has a worldwide reputation as an extremely efficient cargo hub and offers excellent operational capacity, airfield and infrastructure reliability, and easy access to the road network. Together with the ability to operate around the clock, we provide businesses with access to multiple markets across the globe adding significantly to the UK’s appeal as a place to locate and invest.”

Stansted is one of the largest freight hubs in the UK and home to an international cargo operation that transports over 200,000 tonnes of goods to destinations worldwide, including the USA and Far East. A testimony  to the airport’s status as a major international cargo facility is the growing number of industry leaders that have already chosen to operate from the airport – Cargolux, Asiana, British Airways World Cargo, Global Supply Systems, Fed EX, Martinair, Royal Mail, Panalpina, Titan, TNT and UPS.

In 2012, British Airways World Cargo introduced three new Boeing 747-8 freighters into service at Stansted. These superjumbos are 30% quieter and produce 16% less emissions than the Boeing 747-400 aircraft type they replaced. Stansted’s largest freight operator FedEx also strengthened their commitment to the environment and efforts to reduce its carbon footprint by upgrading its fleet with a Boeing 777 freighter in 2011. The jet, which operates on the Stansted to Memphis route, brings significant environmental benefits including lower noise levels and reduced emissions compared to the three engine MD-11 it replaced.
