Today, alongside confirming support for the development of a third runway at Heathrow, the Government has confirmed, in a statement to Parliament, its support for other UK airports looking to make best use of existing runway capacity. The policy makes clear that Government supports all UK airports making best use of their existing runways.

This follows a consultation last year as part of the Government’s development of a new Aviation Strategy.”

In response to the Government statement, Ken O’Toole, London Stansted CEO, said:

“Ahead of the anticipated decision from Uttlesford District Council relating to our application to increase the airport’s limit on passenger numbers to 43 million per year, we welcome today’s statement from Government confirming its support for airports looking to make best use of existing capacity.

“It is vital for the UK economy that the country has the best possible aviation connections and that there is an urgent need to actively support airports, like London Stansted, that can deliver that access now.

“Over the last five years we have increased passenger numbers by nearly 10 million, doubled the number of airlines and secured six new services to the most popular destinations for passengers from the region including Dubai, New York, Boston, Toronto and Washington.

“Building on these successes, we are investing £600 million to improve the airport experience and have submitted a planning application to make best use of our single runway. This will unlock Stansted potential and enable us to serve up to 43 million passengers, deliver 50 percent of London’s expected passenger growth over the next decade and extend the choice of airlines and destinations we serve.”

It was good to welcome some new faces to the event including Fiona Henry from the Cannon Ball Run Europe, Stephen Hanks from Blue Dragon Cars, Pri Bamford from Nurture Pensions, Steve Clayden from airport based Swissport, Lottie and Joanna from IWM Events as well as Jamie and his colleagues from Taylor Milburn just to mention a few.  We are hoping to welcome them as SACC Members really soon!

Julie Budden, Chair SACC said:

"A lot of hard work is put into organising events and it was a delight to see so many people come along to support the BBQ. Having the sunshine was a real bonus! Mike Shields and his team did us proud once again with tasty food, chilled wine and beer - a perfect end to the day!".

Julie went on to say:

"It was great hearing from some of the exhibitors how they have secured business from the recent Check-in @ Stansted - this makes it all worthwhile".

Mike Shields, owner of the Lion and Lamb said: "It is always a pleasure to host the SACC BBQ, there are some wonderful people within the group and I have made some great contacts over the years. I look forward to seeing them all again soon here at the Lion and Lamb".

Stansted Airport recorded its busiest year since 2007 as 22.56 million passengers travelled through the terminal in 2015, an increase of 2.6 million passengers and 13% on the previous 12 months.

Domestic traffic experienced the strongest growth during 2015 with passenger numbers up by 50%, primarily driven by a significant increase in capacity on Scottish routes by Ryanair and easyJet.
In December, over 1.7m passengers used Stansted, an increase of 9.2 per cent on the previous year, making it the second busiest December on record and the 21st month of continuous growth for the airport.
The month also saw the highest ever load factor for any December with an average of 83.2% of all available seats occupied on each flight, surpassing the previous best of 81.5% set in 2014.
Cargo tonnage at Stansted during December increased by 7.8% over the same month last year to lift the annual total to over 237,000 tonnes in the past 12 months, up 4.7% on the previous year and the highest annual total since 2012.

Andrew Harrison, Stansted’s Managing Director, said:
“The last 12 months have been another exciting and transformational period for Stansted with more rapid growth in passenger numbers and a host of significant changes taking place around the airport.
“During the year we saw six consecutive months of two million plus passengers - the first time this has been achieved since 2007- and ended the year with the second busiest December in the airport’s history.
“On the development front, we are now putting the finishing touches to our £80million terminal transformation following the opening of the final phases earlier this year, and work is now underway to construct a new £45 million 357-bed hotel next to the terminal to provide even more choice and enhanced facilities.
“These were all fantastic achievements and real positive signs of the progress we are making at Stansted.
Looking at 2016, it promises to be yet another great year for Stansted as we mark the 25th anniversary of HM The Queen opening the terminal building in 1991, and I’m optimistic we will be able to announce new airline partners joining us at Stansted in the coming months, including more long-haul services.”
